New Cairo

New Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة الجديدة‎ el-Qāhera el-Gedīda) is a city covering an area of about 30,000 hectares (70,000 acres) on the southeastern edge of Cairo Governorate, 25 kilometres (15 mi) from Maadi. New Cairo is one of the new cities, which have been built, in and around Cairo to alleviate the congestion in downtown Cairo. It was established in the year 2000 by presidential decree number 191.
Population: 122 339 (2006), 302 926 (2018), 310 087 (2020).

Of particular significance to geologists is the Petrified Forest Protected Area, located in the vicinity of New Cairo. It is a protected site.
