The official residence and office of the President of the Italian Republic. It was built in 1573 as a summer residence for Pope Gregory XIII. In addition to serving as a papal residence, it housed government offices of the Papal States until the Italian unification. It then became the official residence of the Italian kings until the monarchy was abolished after World War II.
