university, office building, 1901_construction, Beaux-Arts (architecture)
7-story Beaux-Arts office building completed in 1901. Designed by John E. Nitchie as a factory, its original cornice was removed in 1938. In 1966, Schiefflin & Co. moved into the building, using it for the manufacture and storage of chemicals. The 2-story base was renovated in 1997, and is painted dark green, five bays wide. The upper floors are clad in red brick, with an arcade of 5-story round-arches, each divided by metal mullions into six windows. The brick piers have molded terra-cotta bases and composite capitals. The spandrels have foliate terra-cotta panels, and there is a brick roof parapet above an elaborate terra-cotta band.
Several of the floors are leased by NYU. The ground floor is occupied by Kaplan and Lost City Arts.
