office building, skyscraper, International style architecture

592-foot, 45-story International-style office building completed in 1973. Designed by Harrison, Abramovitz & Harris, it was formerly known as The Celanese Building; the name was changed after The Celanese Corporation moved to Dallas. It is one of the so-called "XYZ" slab towers along the west side of 6th Avenue, built as an extension of Rockefeller Center.

The 45-story exterior of the building follows the Rockefeller Center extension's uniform vertical striping, with the limestone piers here nearly flush with the glass surface. The elevated plaza facing Sixth Avenue is flanked on the south side by a lower wing protruding from the main building mass, closing the plaza row of the Extension. The wing consist of a triple-height ground floor with two more floors on top, and has greenery planted around the perimeter of its roof.

The main tower also has a triple-height lobby at the east end, facing the plaza and avenue. There are only half the number of limestone piers at the ground floor extending down from above, alternating with a row of entrance doors. A zipper-style news ticker runs along the near-top of the ground floor at the northeast corner, extending a short distance onto the east facade and longer along the north facade.

There is another lower protruding wing at the west end of the north facade, continuing past the main tower portion. This sets back above the 7th floor, with a lower roof at the 12th floor, the main rectangular tower rising up sheer behind it. At the far west end is a large loading dock, and just to the east is the north opening of the pedestrian passageway through the block than runs below the building's upper floors. There is a final, 6-story wing at the far west end of the south facade on 47th Street, set just to the west of the south opening of the pedestrian corridor.

The former Celanese Building is now global headquarters of the News Corporation (owners of among others the FOX Entertainment Group and News International Publishing). Additionally, there are some retail spaces on the ground floor, occupied by a FedEx Office.

  • The Celanese Building is now known as the News Corporation Building, when News Corps anchored its headquarters there (complete with news ticker wrapped around the base). The Celanese tower is also the home of Fox News Channel.
