The word 'Thomathu' is derived from the Malayalam word thoma ethiya means thoma arrived, thoma is the malayalam name for Thomas (meaning St.Thomas). 'Kadavu' means jetty or harbour.

Niranam is supposed to be the ancient port city Nelcynda, which had commercial relations with Rome, Greece etc. Thomathu kadavu is located on the banks of Kottachal, an ancient water way.

An ecumenical body called 'Niranam Thomathu Kadavu Smaraka Trust' has created an art gallery to commemmorate the arrival of St. Thomas in 52 AD.
