 archeological site, hillfort, ancient ruins

Archaeological site in Uzebkistan, located northwest of modern Qarshi. Archaeological investigation of the site indicates that it was occupied from the 8th century BC until the 6th century AD. By the 2nd century BC, the town featured inner and outer fortifications. The site is identified with the ancient Sogdian town of Nakhshab (possibly Greek Eukratideia). In subsequent centuries the settlement tended to shift southwards, to Shulluk Tepe and later the site of modern Qarshi.
