Federal Territory Mosque was constructed between 1998 and 2000. It is situated on a five hectare site near the Government Office Complex along Jalan Duta. The mosque was opened to the public on October 25, 2000 and was officiated by the 12th King of Malaysia. It is the 44th mosque built by the Government in Kuala Lumpur. The mosque can accommodate 17,000 devotees at one time. In addition to being a place of worship, it also serves as a community centre with a multi-purpose hall and a dining hall for the public. It also serve as an institution for the development of Islamic knowledge with nursery, pre-school, school, hostel, library and computer room.

The Federal Territory Mosque was constructed at a cost of RM255 million by Ahmad Zaki Resources Berhad (www.azrb.com/) in a 50% Joint Venture with Johawaki Sdn. Bhd. (www.johawaki.com.my/). The mosque's design is a blend of Ottoman and Malay architectural styles, heavily influenced by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultan_Ahmed_Mosque). It has 22 domes made from a composite material of glass fibre fabric mixed with epoxy resin to make it durable and light. The marble carvings on the mihrab (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihrab) and the main gateway were done by skilled Indian artisans whose forefathers built the Taj Mahal.
