Established 16 October 1917.

The first large-scale, general-purpose electronic digital computer, ENIAC (electronic numerical integrator and computer) was delivered to the U.S. Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL), Aberdeen Proving Ground, in 1947. Built by the University of Pennsylvania under an Army Ordnance Corps contract with technical supervision by BRL, ENIAC calculated artillery firing tables and performed computations on scientific problems until decommissioned in 1955.

The Army Proving Ground was at Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook in NJ until 1918 when the range of the artillery shells exceeded the size of the proving ground. Visit the enormous collection of American and foreign military vehicles at the Aberdeen Ordinance Museum.

The city of Baltimore was originally founded in the site of Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Formerly home to the 69th Coast Artillery Regiment in 1930 and the 49th Bombardment Squadron from 1922 to 1928.
