Greenwich House Community Center

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Barrow Street, 29
theatre, interesting place, community centre / hall, Georgian (architecture)

7-story Neo-Federal community center completed in 1917. Designed by Delano & Aldrich with decoration by Arthur Crisp, it has high, arched windows at ground floor flanking the deep reveals of the entrance doorway. This door is set in an arched opening, similar to those of the windows, and has a modillioned pediment carried on slender pilasters. Above this the arch forms a glass transom. The firm also designed an annex building for their pottery program at 18 Jones Street.

The next two floors have windows with exterior shutters, those at the second floor being French, doors which open on a wrought iron balcony which extends practically the width of the building. The third floor windows are low casements and those at the fourth floor are separated by stone panels unified at the bottom by a band course which also serves as sills for the windows. Surmounting the fourth floor is a handsome modillioned cornice with a paneled balustrade above it. Set slightly back is a high slate roof, rising vertically for one floor and steeply pitched above that level.

The Greenwich House organization was founded in 1902 by Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch, Jacob Riis, Carl Schurz, Felix Adler and others, to uplift the then-decaying neighborhood. The still-active community center started the city's first neighborhood association and pioneered daycare, after-school and drug rehab programs. The Barrow Street Theatre is also located here.
