Built at a cost of RM1.75 billion, Berjaya Times Square was officially opened in October 2003 by the 4th Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. This giant structure is a twin tower complex containing a shopping centre and a 5-star hotel located smack in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. Both towers are 203 metres (666 ft) tall, with 48 floors. Originally, this land belonged to the millionaire and philanthropist Cheong Yoke Choy before World War II. His massive bungalow once stood proudly until the entire land was purchased by Berjaya Group (www.berjaya.com/) owned by Tan Sri Vincent Tan for the development of the current Berjaya Times Square.
Shopping at Berjaya Times Square is no different than shopping at any of the other popular shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur. Visitor will see similar brands and similar collections at similar prices. The only thing that differentiates Berjaya Times Square from the other shopping malls is the entertainment that it offers. Asia's largest indoor theme park (as of 2010) and IMAX 2D and 3D can be found here. The IMAX 2D and 3D Theatre is Malaysia's first and movie lovers are given the opportunity to experience movies in a larger-than-life sort of way. In addition, book fans will be happy to know that one of the largest Borders (www.borders.com/) stores in the world is located here.
Today, due to heavy competition from the recently established shopping mall, The Pavilion in 2007, and the expansion of Suria KLCC in April 2011, Berjaya Times Square went to a steep decline. It is fair to say now that the risks taken by Berjaya Group for constructing this massive building haven't truly paid off - that, as many people commented, Berjaya Times Square is too big, too many floors, too many shops. Its massive size has lead to its downfall.
