NYU Gramercy Green Residence Hall

USA / New Jersey / West New York / Third Avenue, 316

241-foot, 21-story postmodern residential building completed in 2008. Designed by Perkins Eastman Architects, it is one of the newest NYU residence halls. Gramercy Green is also known as the nicest. The building was originally constructed as luxury condominiums by developer J.D. Carlisle for Irish investors, but was acquired before opening by NYU at a cost of $275-million, who needed new dorm space. This explains the unusually high level of features for a dormitory - including hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. Gramercy Green houses 925 students.

The facade is clad in white metal paneling and glass above a ground floor of dark-grey stone lined with glass storefronts. The main entrance is near the north end on Third Avenue, with a revolving door and a traditional glass door below a small metal-and-glass canopy. There is a large plate-glass window to either side.

The building features one setback at the 16th floor; the ground floor is occupied by a Duane Reade drugstore and an HSBC Bank branch.
