Abel Tasman National Park (established in 1942) is renowned for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and world-famous Abel Tasman Coast Track. It also has a mild climate and is a good place to visit at any time of the year.

Location: At 22,530 hectares Abel Tasman is New Zealand's smallest national park. It is located at the top of the South Island; the nearest towns are Motueka, Takaka and Kaiteriteri.

Explanatory note on Hotspots for newbie WikiMapians: WikiMapia has a map overlay which often shows roads, rivers, mountains and other topographical features.
To activate this map overlay, simply click on the "View" option at top left and then choose either "Map" or " Hybrid" from the drop down menu.

Because most topographical features are already mapped and named, it is requested that folks do not clutter up WikiMapia by adding redundant Hotspots UNLESS the Hotspot to be created is:
1) small in size
2) thoughtfully placed
3) adding additional information eg informative text or a link to a photograph,
wikipedia article or other website

You are welcome to discuss this suggested policy at:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Alexandre_Koriakine

As an example of this policy, this Hotspot was created and positioned for the following reasons:
a) to provide a Wikipedia link
b) to provide an anchor for the green (polygon) arrow [since the naming of the Abel
Tasman, Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks is much too small and
insignificant on the current map layer]
c) both this Hotspot and its associated green (polygon) arrow are deliberately
positioned out to sea so that they are (i) more visible at lower zoom levels and
(ii) do not obscure the actual National Park themselves.

Thank you for your anticipated help and co-operation!

  • Good initiative Gaimhreadhan, nice explanation, but your layer positioned on the sea seems indicate, to all the visitors, a weird Marine National Park... I'll not touch on this work because is not my region (I think that in W.M., every country need to be protected by your own people), but its is not the better solution. (Think if the Park was sited distant of the sea...)
  • Don't you see the "Green arrow" pointing to the land? Don't you tink that people can enable the map layer and see the boundaries of the National Park?
  • Ok. >> "do not obscure the actual National Park" - Don't you think that the people can select the [View > No Places] and see the Park area cleaned? ...If it isn't practical, see the map layer isn't too. Anyway, to solve some viewer's little confusion, you could put "Abel Tasman National Park (appointed by arrow)". =)
  • From what I heard, this place is choked with wasps.
