The land for the parish was donated by Lord Selkirk in 1817; the parish was officially established with the arrival of the first priest from the Church of England, the Rev. John West, CMS, in 1820. The first building was erected closer to the Red River in 1822, and was ruined by the great flood of 1826. The present building is the fourth church on the propery, the third Cathedral, and was erected in 1926. The Cathedral Parish continues as a place of worship for all and a vibrant community of faith, with responsbility also for care of the cemetery, established in 1812 with the burial of the first Selkirk Settlers to die. The present Dean is the Very Rev. Paul N. Johnson. The Cathedral is the Seat of the Anglican Bishop of Rupert's Land, Anglican Church of Canada, the Rt. Rev. Donald Phillips.
