Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA) began in 1954, when it joined the Colombo Plan, an organization set up in 1950 to assist Asian countries in their socio-economic development.
The Okinawa International Centre was established in 1985 as a key centre for international cooperation activities in Okinawa. JICA implement a variety of programmes to support the nation-building of developing countries through technical cooperation. As an integrated international centre, JICA/OIC carries out an assortment of activities that include a technical training programmes for overseas participants, youth invitation programmes (Friendship Programme for the 21st Century) and development education for students in Okinawa. JICA/OIC also recruits international cooperation personnel to be dispatched abroad. These people include technical experts, Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), Senior Volunteers (SV) etc.

Our AVT class had a lovely, demure and young Nihonggo tutor whose father used to play music at the old Papillon restaurant in downtown Okinawa. To all of you my undying gratitude for learning so much in class and about the Japanese people!!!

  • Hello again OIC-JICA, It was a long time ago, i.e., in 1985, I had my forest soil training course there. It was a wonderful time in my life. I still remember my coordinator, Tsutomu Nakazato-san and my classmates, Lory-san, Sola-san, and Vikhan-san. Thank You OIC-JICA for giving me the chance to experience a good training, and social relationship with everybody in OIC-JICA. Hope I can see you again.
  • I am from Marshall Islands (in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, near Hawaii).I am working for my country's Parliament ever since as a translator/interpreter and public information officer. I atended an Intensive Japanese Language Course (B) at OIC for 9 months from October 1987 to May 1988. It was a very memorial times of my life for learning not only Japanese but the very unique Japanese culture and traditional ways of life. I learned how my other course mates wonderful ways of life and how they live in their own country: In my course were wonderful trainees from Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan, Kenya, Nelap, and China.   • I was in Okinawa in 1986 and 2006, for 6 months and 3 months. Wonderful time and I could observe the development of okinawa from 1986 to 2006. On that time, 1986, okinawa was almost considered not japan, but in 2006 okinawa was almost the same of mainland, but with wonderful views. Great time! Great people! Great beers! Great friends!   • I'm Arif Bin Yahya from Malaysia...I was in OIC from Jun to Dis 1988. I did an Audio Visual Technology For Educational Production. I had a wonderful life in Okinawa. I still remember our Kabuta Son and Chinan and also Mikekawa son. Oh how nice to there in OIC again. I still remember OIC Head , Abe son. TQVM. Cu all again.
  • I'm Achmad Isfarain from Indonesia.....I was in the OIC from April to December 1988. I did an Public Health Technology. I was very impressed with Urasoe that climate was the same as in Indonesia and I had wonderful life because there are a disciplined society. I still remember my coordinator Yasumura Hideo, IPHT soco Chokei Yoshida and some lecturer in OIC and IPHT as Kinjo san, Takao Kishimoto san etc.. I miss OIC and hope can see you again
