 office building  Add category

223-foot, 20-story Renaissance-revival office building completed in 1927. Designed by Robert T. Lyons, it is clad in buff-colored brick above a 2-story black granite base that extends out to the building line on the west side; the tower is set back on this side from the base. Both the north and west facades are divided into four bays at the base, with large tripartite show-windows in silver metal framing. The main entrance is in the 2nd bay from the south on the avenue, with recessed metal-and-glass double-doors between narrower side windows. There are central, glass-and-metal double-door entrances to storefronts in the south and north bays. The two east bays on the north facade have single-doors at the east end of each bay.

The 3rd floor, where the tower setback begins on the west side, is clad in dark-brown brick banded with tan brick. There are three bays of tripartite windows on the north facade, with ornamental, projecting metal fins between each pane. The west facade at the 3rd floor has four bays of tripartite windows, without the metal fins. An array of cellular antennae are mounted on the roof of the base at the west end.

The upper floors are divided into five smaller bays on the west facade, with paired windows in the middle bays and single-windows in the end bays. The center bay has subtle, vertical, brick pilasters around each window, and there are four square, brick spandrels with dogstooth patterns between each floor at the center bay. On the north facade, the 3rd floor is capped by a stone band course with a row of shields flanked by leafy fronds. The upper floors have five bays, with three windows in the middle, then single-window bays, and paired windows in the end bays. The three-window- and paired window bays have stone spandrels; they are ornamented with shields between the 4th & 5th floors, and with projecting, rounded columns bisecting the panels between the 5th & 6th floors. At most of the floors above the spandrels have dogstooth patterns of darker brick, until the upper floors. The rounded columns in the spandrels return between the 12th & 13th floors, and the 14th & 15th floors. The shields are repeated between the 13th & 14th floors. The facade sets back above the 14th floor, except for the middle bay, which extends to the 15th floor. The is another setback at the ends above the 16th floor, and at the middle above the 17th. There is a full-floor setback above the 18th floor, with two recessed penthouse levels on top. There is also a tall mechanical penthouse at the east side of the roof.

The south elevation, above the shorter neighboring building, has two bays of paired window around a shallow, central light court. The ground floor is occupied by a Pret-a-Manger restaurant, a Starbucks coffee, and Dill & Parsley restaurant, with Sahag Workshop beauty salon on the 2nd floor.
