Residence designed c. 1916 by Henry Otis Chapman in the French Renissance style for Henri Bendel {merchant}. Bendel was the founder and president of the Henri Bendel luxury department store. The estate was purchased by Walter P. Chrysler, Sr. in 1923 who commissioned Charles Leavitt & Sons in collaboration with John Jacob Levison to design terraces, paths, pergolas, and a driveway flower garden.

The estate was put up for auction in 1941 and was purchased by the War Shipping Administration a year later for $100,000. Formal education at the school began in 1942. Now part of US Merchant Marine Academy where it is known as Wiley Hall which serves as the administration building for the installation.
