Edward Wells was the older brother of General William Wells, preceding him as president of Wells Richardson, a Burlington pharmaceuticals manufacturer. Both men were president or director of several prominent area firms and members of the State Legislature.

Designed by Alfred B. Fisher, for a number of years the house was known as Mercy House, (part of the now defunct Trinity College), later the Delta Psi Fraternity House (notice the Greek letters on the roof).

It is now owned by Champlain College and has been extensively renovated.
