Begich Towers was built in 1952 as a military barracks. At 14 stories, it was once the tallest building in Alaska. It now contains 196 condominiums and apartments, the Whittier police dept, and two floors of commercial businesses.
The Begich Towers were originally called the Hodge Building when they were constructed by the U. S. Army for housing. They were transferred to civilian use following the Army's departure in 1960.
