Hammarby is the former summer residence of Carl Linneaus, the world famous naturalist who devised the system of Latin naming for plants and animals that is now ubiquitous. The small estate Hammarby was bought by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. He wanted a farm on the countryside where he could spend the summers together with his family, away from the unhealthy quarters of Uppsala. The home contains many furnishings and personal effects of Linneaus’. There is a visitor centre, exhibition and cafe here. The grounds contain many fascinating plants from all over the world.
