United States Marine Corps War Memorial

USA / Virginia / Arlington /
Second World War 1939-1945, First World War 1914-1918, American Revolutionary War 1775-1783, United States Marine Corps, war memorial

This statue, often called the Iwo Jima Memorial, is dedicated to all US Marines who gave their lives in combat. Most think it is the Iwo Jima Memorial because its a statue of the famous photo taken on Iwo Jima.

The rocks at the base are actual rocks removed from the area of the original flag raising on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The shipment of the rocks via tractor trailer was part of the fund raising effort for the memorial. The truck transited through all 48 of the contiguous states on their journey from Washington state to Washington, DC.
