The Viru-Jaagupi Church received church land from the Livonian Order Master Johann von Mengden in 1453, Johann Wolthus von Hersel in 1473, Berend von der Borch in 1482 and Wolter von Plettenberg in 1504. The exact date of construction of the church is unknown, the church was first mentioned in 1473 as an auxiliary church of the German Church of St. Mary in Rakvere. The Viru-Jaagupi Church was also the main church of the Viru-Jaagupi parish. The church was destroyed by Russian troops in the war at the end of the 16th century and was rebuilt in 1669. In 1703, the church estate was devastated again during the Northern War. The church was set on fire by Russian troops in 1703 and 1708. The church was restored and renovated in 1877 and 1878.
