Constructed 1927-30, the three story brick building is situate at the confluence of Big Creek and Pigeon River. The 3 unit, 112 MW power plant receives water from Waterville Lake, a man made lake 12 miles upstream. The water travels through a 14 foot wide tunnel that was blasted through the rock, for the last six miles with a drop of 861 feet. The plant was named after Charlie Walters, the then Vice President of Carolina Light & Power which developed the site.
