  • I was on top of hill 704, over looking Yoju and the Han River the afternoon of Saturday, February 3rd, 1951. We had arrived by truck convoy one mile from Ichon about January 30th, '51. We did not dig in, but stayed there until the morning of January 2nd. Our battalion marched to Ichon and moved into Korean homes. Next morning, 1st battalion joined our 3rd battalion in the street at 7am. Major General Bryant Moore was there with his assistant division commander, Brigadier General Watson. The artillery commander, 19th Infantry Regiment commander, both battalion commanders and all of the officers were there, near by. I had been in Italy with General Moore from 1946 until he left to become commendant at West Point. I would leave Italy, July 1949 with Colonel Watson. There were no Chinese troops south of the Han River as we marched from Ichon at 9am, climbing...what I will identify as Hill 699. 1st battalion climbed to the top. Our 3rd battalion followed. I say in deep snow making chocolate ice cream while my friend Martineze laughed. The three colonel stood, over looking the valleys below. Across from 699, more or less was Hill 730. First battalion decended 699 climbed 730. Our 3rd battalion followed. But, we marched east into the valley between Hills 730 and 704. Love Company was point company. 1st platoon of Love was point platoon of 3rd battalion. 1st platoon began its ascent at lowest elevation of Hill 704. 20 sixty mm mortar shells exploded in front of me, among the men of 1st platoon. This was the first day that Korean men carried our supplies. 4 Koreans were killed and 5 were wounded. 5 Americans were killed and 4 were wounded. Inanely, our battalion stopped and stood under the Chinese while they watched us from that lowest elevation of 704. I became point man, walking around the dead and wounded. I was more than half way up 704, when a Chinese machine gunner fired 12 inches over my head and shot 125 soldiers in the valley. The gunner picked up his weapon, put it on his shoulder and walked along the ridge toward Yoju. Not a shot was fired at him.
