The Patton Island Bridge opened to traffic in October 2002. It is part of a larger construction project of an expressway from S.R. 133 (Cox Creek Parkway) in Florence to U.S. 43 south of Muscle Shoals. The Patton Island Bridge is six lanes wide with a separated bicycle lane on the east side. The bridge is named for uninhabited Patton Island which it crosses. The Alabama Senate Resolution 5 of the year 2010 Officially Designated as the "Singing River Bridge" after the Native American name for the Tennessee River thereby recognizing the legends of the Native American People who were the First Inhabitants of the area.
