 ghost town, CDP - Census Designated Place

Site of major silver and lead deposits discovered in October 1874. Peak population was more than a thousand in 1876 when some 20 mines were in operation. Named for Dr. Darwin French, aka E. Darwin French (1822-1902) who had come into the area in search of the elusive (i.e. fictitious?) "Gunsite Mine" after trying his luck first in Dogtown, then in Bodie. Present population is 54, divided among 36 households.
