The lagoon was once separated from the sea by a series of sandy dunes. The creation of the Cuautla Channel in 1974 by the Ministry of Hydric Resources which opens the lagoon up to the Pacific was meant to improve fisheries in the area, has inadvertently increased salinity of the lagoon resulting in widespread death of the magroves.
The artificial Cuautla Channel was planned as a 40-meter wide by 2-meter deep channel but serious tidal erosion have carved out the watercourse to be a 700-meter wide by 20-meter deep, allowing sea wter to penetrate deeper into the lagoon.
Shrimp farms are located in the southeastern shores and the Del Valle Lagoon
