Mayo Cotton Mill was originally constructed in 1885 and was known as Island Creek or Huckleberry Mill. Later the mill was named after an owners daughter, Mary Louise. In 1903 the mill was damaged by a flood but reopened in 1910 to operate till closing in 1932. Another company bought the mill and began production in 1940 renaming the mill Mayo Mill. The mill changed different company hands until 1976 when it finally closed. On February 21, 2000 the mill was destroyed by arson leaving the remains on the bank of the creek.

  • my family purchased the MAyo Mill in 1938 > tHe mill had been owned by Whitman Textiles from Boston,Ma. The Mayo Mill had been closed for about 2 years when Neisler Mills of Kings MOuntain,N.C. purchased the mill at a bankruptcy auction at the Spartanburg County courthouse. The Neisler's owned 7 other textile mills in North and South Carolina and used the Mayo mill to supply cotton yarn for it's weaving mills that made upholstery, tablecloths, and napkins.Neisler Mills was well known in the textile business as the weavers of the famous gold satin curtain at the Radio Music Hall at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. In 1955 Neisler MIlls sold all eight of their mills to Horvath,Inc. of Lowell, Ma.The Horvath's became involved with Teamster's Union in some unsavory loans and kickbacks and the mill was closed in the early 1970's.
