Six Flags New Orleans Site

USA / Louisiana / New Orleans /
amusement park, abandoned / shut down, interesting place, movie / film / TV location, Six Flags

The remnants and former site of Six Flags New Orleans, destroyed by flooding during Hurricane Katrina. The park opened in 2000 as Jazzland by Spanish company called Parques Reunidos before being bought and renamed Six Flags New Orleans in 2003 after they took over the lease.

The park sits in a basin surrounded by its own levee system. When the basin flooded, nobody came to pump out the park for a full month. It sat under 5-15 feet of saltwater all that time. Steel and wood don't react well to being immersed in sea water mixed with sewage for a month. The high winds and the subsequent flooding caused catastrophic damage to the park which Six Flags chose not to repair.

Despite that, the park is now a morbid curiosity as much of the infrastructure (even gift shop items) still remain, becoming one of America's only abandoned theme parks. Since 2011 it's been used as a filming location for movies because of that uniqueness. However, the site is patrolled heavily by the New Orleans Police Department and is off-limits to unauthorized trespassers.

  • i went there 2 times but i cant remeber it
  • This was not the worst park of Six Flags.
  • Yes it was. Now I think the worst one is Six Flags Great Escape in Lake George, NY.
  • Should be noted that before it was Six Flags it was Jazz Land.
  • That is noted in the description .
