In 1944 the State Defense Council signed the Decree on the establishment of the Leningrad Higher Marine Engineering College, in 1945 on the basis of the Hydrographic Institute the Higher Arctic Marine School was established and in 1949 it was named after renowned Russian admiral S.O. Makarov. In1954 they were united and transformed into the Leningrad Higher Marine College named after admiral S.O. Makarov. In December, 1990 it was awarded the status of the Academy.
