Sialkot was annexed by the British in 1849 and Sialkot Cantonments were constructed around 1853 several kilometers away from then municipal boundaries of Sialkot City. Main contractor was Sheikh Maula Buksh who also constructed and gifted the Cathedral of Sialkot Cantt to the British. Another big trader was Sheikh Goolam Qadir who established the first departmental store of subcontinent at Sialkot Cantt. Most of the institutions established in and around the cantonment are over a hundred years old.
