Kalyazin, capital of the Kalyazinsky region, was an ancient town that stood on the right bank of the Volga river. In the 1940s the historic center of Kalyazin was completely submerged due to the construction of the Uglich hydrological basin. Since then only the part of the bell tower, recently used as a lighthouse, was saved, remembering the ancient submerged city.
