This is the Croton Dam. Built by (mostly Italian) immigrant workers between 1899 and 1905. It was for many years the tallest earthenware dam in the world. It has been closed to car traffic since 9/11. It's being repaired. Pedestrians may walk across. A beautiful site! Croton has a saying "Croton is a dam town."
This dam replaced the function of the original Croton Dam, completed in 1842, and now submerged about 3 miles to the east. Croton Reservoir is part of the New York City water supply system.
The Old Croton Trailway which runs to the southwest from the dam follows the path of the original Croton Aqueduct, built between 1837 and 1842. The path of the aqueduct to the east, toward the old dam, is now submerged below the reservoir.
