Beirut Souks (Greater Beirut)

Lebanon / Jabal Lubnan / Bayrut / Greater Beirut
store / shop, shopping mall, interesting place

Before the Civil War, the historic Souks of Beirut housed boutiques, jewelry stores, haute-couture houses, and Lebanon’s biggest fruit, vegetable and flower market. They were not restored in their original form after the civil war ended in the early 1990s as their medieval buildings had sustained irreparable damage. Instead, an international design competition was launched to build a modern version of them, and the Beirut Souks as we know them today opened in 2009. They consist of 200 shops located along vaulted alleys and arcades, and while bearing little resemblance architecturally to their pre-war counterparts, they have retained the original Hellenistic street grid layout as well as their historical names. The archeological findings recovered in the Souks have also been restored.
