Hot spring spa in Akigawa Valley
www.seotonoyu.jp/ (Japanese)
The water feels "soapy" - this and the smell imply alcaline-type water.
A well-designed onsen in the pretty Akiruno area of western Tokyo. Bathers enjoy an indoor bath, rotemburo (on a platform overlooking nice wooded valley) and sauna (entry 800 yen, which includes use of shampoo and body soap but not a small towel); for after bath relaxation there are are lounges and private rooms (prices start at 3000 yen for 3 hours) for as well as a cafe and Japanese restaurant. Outside, there's a souvenir shop. Cottages are on-site for overnight guests (prices start at 7500 yen per person with meals).
Again, towel not included in admission, and can be purchased for 200 yen. Other amenities available on surcharge, too.
Nearest Station: Musashi Itsukaichishi (about 20 min by bus)
Address: 565 Ototsu, Akiruno-shi, Tokyo
Telephone: 042-595-3121 (check in advance because the bathhouse is irregularly closed for technical inspection)
Fax: 042-595-3121
Business Hours 10:00am to 10:00pm, closed second Wednesday of the month.
If you have to go back to Tokyo or other city, and if you travel by bus, do not forget to check the bus time-table outside the bathhouse for the last departure time.
