This historic site was once Fort Moore, an American fort built after US forces took the town in the US-Mexican War. From that time until the early 20th century it was the site for public executions by hanging. From 1853 to 1947 the site was also a cemetery. It later was the home of the second location of Los Angeles High School, then later was the headquarters of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
