This mine gave its name to the surrounding village of Sling but the actual roots of the name 'Sling' are not known. The mine has been long out of use having closed for production around 1912. Reasonably productive during its lifetime, the shaft is thought to have been filled sometime in the 1950s and only a small concrete foundation remain on the site. The nearby Miners Arms is actually a very old Pub and was in existance during the lifetime of the mine. Underground this mine was connected to just about all the other iron ore workings in the area. The workings in this area stretch as far as Bream (towards Lydney) and also approx a mile in the opposite direction towards Coleford.
