2,850 metres (9,350 ft) - The Most Violent Eruption in Modern Time
In 1815 Mt. Tambora suffered the Most Violent Eruption in Modern Time.
It caused, in 1816, "The Year Without Summer" with Europe experiencing snow falls in July.
Before the explosion the summit was approximately 4,200 m (13,000 ft) high, after the explosion it was only 2850 m (9,000 ft) high. The caldera has a diameter of 7.0 km (4.3 miles).
It's described as Super Colossal in the Volcanic Eruption Index (VEI - 7) and killed 90,000 people because of pyroclastic flows, starvation and disease.
