Southmayd Farm was built in 1870 by Charles Southmayd. The 80 acre farm was sold in March 2007 for $6,900,000, the highest sale price at the time for any private residence in Stockbridge or Berkshire County. Charles Southmayd and Joseph Choate, his Stockbridge neighbor, were prominent New York law partners who successfully argued against a federal income tax before the Supreme Court. But in 1913, the 16th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified, giving Congress the power to impose an income tax. The Charles F. Southmayd Professorship, is an endowed chair at the Yale Law School, a gift to the school from Emily Southmayd in honor of her brother, an 1884 graduate.
