A long-running New Jersey waterpark opened in 1978 (only briefly closing in the late 1990s). Known as Action Park for most of existence and built as Vernon Valley Summer Park, the waterpark was known for its often inherently dangerous rides and the fact that injuries were common before closing in 1997 due to lawsuits. The legacy of Action Park was immortalized in the 2018 comedy film "Action Point".

It would be reopened in 1998 as Mountain Creek Waterpark, with new owners, new safety features, and the elimination of many of the non-water park rides. From 2014 to 2016, Mountain Creek Waterpark became Action Park once more, if briefly, but the name failed to connect with younger audiences and the name was reverted.
