Originally known as Wattrum Kaserne, completed in late 1914, and enlarged during the Second World War. During WW-2, the kaserne was occupied by two German infantry battalions.
The first American units occupied the kaserne in 1945. Various commands used the barracks until Combat Command C moved in on 13 February 1953.
The barracks were re-named in honor of First Lieutenant Bernard J. Ray, 8th Infantry Regiment, who was awarded the Medal of Honor after his death on 17 November 1944, during the drive through the Hürtgen Forest near Schevenhütte.

  • Spec-4 Leonard Ortiz . I was stationed at Ray barracks in 10/1974 to 4/1976 . I was in A.co 1/32nd Armor Regiment of the 3rd Armored Division . ( Bandits ) our field crest was - Victory or Death .... The List above forgot 2/27 field artillery , 2nd of the 32 Amored dukes . Germany was great . Friedberg was a beautiful city . the Paprika down town is where we would get some good eats , snitzel and pomfritz , after a night of danceing at Central Studios . Leecher beer & Flippys beer at Grafenwoehr training area ---- and F.T.A. ( friedberg training area ) .... I will not for get Jesse Lopez from Stanton , Ca .   • I was station at Ray, Friedbergs Sep 1961-Jan1966, A Co 1/32 Armor BN, We will have A Co's Reuinion 10-12 Jul 2015, at Nashville TN. The Association of 3d Armor Division Veterans wil have there Reunion 15-19 Jul 2015 at Kansas City, Mo. I will be attending both. I live in Leavenworth, KS, I Retired in 11/81.   • I was Stationed at Ray Barracks 91-94 with 2-67 Armor. My first home in the Army and the BEST!!! Will never forget my years there! To see it torn down is very sad and a testament to our forever changing times. Made a lot of lifelong Friends, both on the military and civilian sector as well.
