The former Brock Research Center Experimental Farm was started in 1957 and run by William H. Brock, who tirelessly searched for varieties of fruits and vegetables which could be adapted to the arid Imperial Valley. Many of the varieties he cultivated, either on his own or in conjunction with the US Department of Agriculture, the University of California or the University of Arizona, are still in use in commericial production and breeding programs, especially asparagus. Mr. Brock passed away July 21, 2006 at the age of 90. The Bureau of Reclamation is currently constructing a reservoir, Drop 2, which members of the Imperial Irrigation District Board hope to rename after the late Mr. Brock.
