Talk:Original Wikimapia FAQ
From WikiMapia
| This is a discussion (talk) page.
Having discussions on a free-form wiki page will seem strange at first. It helps if everyone follows some simple editing conventions:

[edit] What should be on our front page?
This discussion has been moved to Talk:Main_Page_redesign, its more natural home. Arb 15:46, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
[edit] What is the purpose of this wiki?
- To develop the User Guide.
- To allow access to and hence easier editing of the Wikimapia place data (Arb's dream number 1).
- To interface with the Wikimapia tag system so that these can become proper hierarchical categories (Arb's dream number 2).
Add your further suggestions below.
We should eventually aim to have a guideline (page) that sets out very clearly and simply What this wiki is and what this wiki is not.

More Suggestions:
- For project coordination (RAINGOD's dream).
- For any information that should be sticky.
By the way Arb, fabulous work on the wiki. I like it!

[edit] Headings as links
On the current Main Page a number of the headings have been turned into links. My personal feeling is that this is less than optimal. It makes the reader have to think several times more than necessary eg:
- Why is this heading blue when all the others are black? Oh, I see, it's a link.
- How do I find more about the subject being discussed here? Oh I see, click on the header.
It's much better to have the links in the text under the heading.

[edit] What is our wiki called
Is it:
- WikiMapia
- Wikimapia
Both are used on the Main Page.
Also is it:
- Wiki
- wiki.
We should choose one of each (or ask Koriakine to) and use them consistently.
Arb 12:19, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
The website itself is called "Wikimapia," with the "m" lower case. The main page should also reflect that, but the wiki here should have the capital "M" (WikiMapia). It should help distinguish between the two.

- Well, i think i don't understand your point, Anonymous1. In fact, in title bar of the main website, with maps, we have "WikiMapia" and it's also in the main menu of classic version - remebemering beta was released 4 months ago and probvably it didn't exist on 13 august, 2008 yet... And i don't understand also why differentiate the capital letter 'M' for this wiki.
- But in fact, now we have "wikimapia" (without any capital letter) in the image for this wiki logo, and in the black bar of beta menu. And we have "Wikimapia" in title bar of beta version. Since it's a proper name, i think it's the best way to use everywhere. So, my sugestion is to use:
- Wikimapia, for maps site itself
- Wikimapia Wiki, for this wiki
- Of course, if we are referring to this wiki just as an object (like for any wiki), it may be non-capitalized. I think it's the same that happens to "Formule 1 Hotel", and then we can use simply "hotel" (not capitalized) to refer to it.

[edit] Translating Templates
What do you all think about translating the templates to different languages to go on the other main pages (The ones not in English)?
Anonymous1 06:10, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
- That's an excellent idea.
- The names of the templates should be translated too (keeping "Template:" in English of course).
- As for the Main Page, if you copy the existing code (as seen when in edit mode) to your language's page and then carefully translate all the text strings (leaving the markup alone) it should work just fine. The only tricky bit is around POTD which uses the (en) convention. Replace "(en)" with your language's ISO 639-1 two letter language code and then translate any necessary templates (they should show up as red links).
- Note that the ISO 639-1 codes are different to those used in Wikimapia
- The first person to go through this exercise might usefully document which templates are involved for the benefit of those following on.
- Any problems, leave me a message.

[edit] List of User Level 1
With all due respect, can we create an article about List of UL1 users? happygoth09 16:53, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
