Wikimapia is a Web 2.0 project to describe the whole planet Earth. It was created by Alexandre Koriakine and Evgeniy Saveliev, inspired by Google Maps and Wikipedia.

[edit] How you can help
- Tell all your friends about Wikimapia. Submit Wikimapia to news sites and forums. The more people who know about Wikimapia the better it will be - information will be fresher and more accurate!
- Add new and interesting places
- Modify place information where it is needed
- Add information in English to places described in another languages (or translate what is there - Google Translate and Babel Fish could be your friends).
[edit] Wikimapia on Google Earth
If you have Google Earth installed you may click on our Wikimapia data layer for Google Earth. More on Matt Jones' blog.
The default language for this layer is English.
[edit] Why you should register
We are adding more and more functionality to Wikimapia. Some of these functions are available only to registered users and especially to ranked users (to avoid vandalism). Registration is easy and free.
[edit] About user levels
| Level 0 | Unregistered and newly registered users | Simple functions like add/edit place, add photos. Some restrictions to avoid vandalism. |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Registered users | Almost all functions are available. |
| Level 2 | Advanced users | All functions + some administrative privileges (protect article, etc.). |
For more information see user levels.
[edit] How to add a place
Click Add Place at the top left of your screen. A detailed step-by-step guide can be found at How to add a place.
[edit] Private places
Private places usually mark personal homes. Do not add silly information. Instead, provide an informative description, eg:
- Title
- 3478, Rainbow Street. Home of Tanya and Alice.
- Description
- A nice green house with a red roof where I, Tanya, live with my sister Alice, mom Anne and dad Alex.
We have a nice garden and a swimming pool.
- Address
- 3478, Rainbow Street, Mytown.
Silly places like "I live here," "My house," and "I've been there" should and will be deleted.
[edit] Deleting a wrong place
You must be a registered user to perform this action. Click on the place to open its place window then select Delete place from the menu at the top-left of the window. The place will be deleted after a delay that depends on your user level. More at Deletion.
[edit] How to remove a bad comment
- If you see some bad words in a description or title, you may edit them. First, Point your mouse over Menu (in the top-left corner of the place window) and click Edit this page. Then, edit the place as needed. When you are done, click the Save button in the lower left hand corner of the window.
- If it is in the place's comments area, you can give a bad vote on the comment by clicking the bad vote icon (red icon). After 5 bad votes, the message will be hidden. Privileged users will be able to delete the message when it has more bad votes than good votes.
More at Comments.
[edit] Unclear and impossible-to-zoom-in areas
Images are updated by the Google Maps team. Soon all of the planet will be covered. Wikimapia has no control over the updates and display of map imagery, street, borders, and labels information.
[edit] GPS
You can use Wikimapia on your GPS system. Read for detailed info.
[edit] What is the best browser for Wikimapia?
We recommend Firefox, it's the fastest browser to use with Wikimapia.
