All rivers require attention to detail, based on their complexity, as rivers may be wide, narrow, straight, twisty, rocky, icy or otherwise varied.

Some basic hints:

Select the greatest (ie z=1) ZOOM factor available for the river you are editing.

If part of the river is obscured by clouds or haze, it would be better to leave that section blank, unless you have access to a better source of imagery. If you do, go ahead and continue, as eventually the hazy or cloud-covered section will have it's imagery updated and the river you edited should still be more or less in the right place.

For wide rivers, I suggest to take a middle line, with the exception of long, sloping curves, which may be taken as a 'racing' line, that is, find a smooth line from the center that sweeps around the curve and eventually returns to the middle of the river after exiting the curve.

For wide rivers with islands, if both sides of the island provide sufficient space, then create smooth lines for both sides. If one side is definitely wider than another use your best judgment whether or not to create two lines.

For wide rivers with rapids, I tend to follow the 'racing' line, as long as the line entering and exiting curves or rapids is smooth.

Smoothness is a function of the number of segments you enter, so be generous. Long, straight lines do exist, even in nature, but more often the curvy nature of rivers will be evident.
