U.S. Route 1 is a major north-south U.S. numbered highway on the east coast of the United States. It travels from Key West, Florida to the Canadian border in Fort Kent, Maine and is the longest north-south road in the U.S. In Virginia it parallels I-85 from North Carolina south of South Hill to Petersburg. It then parallels I-95 from Petersburg to Washington, D.C. It connects the major Virginia cities of South Hill, Petersburg, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Alexandria, and Arlington; but, being followed by the interstates, it mostly serves as a local route. In Virginia, it was historically the route of the Jefferson Davis Highway, an auto trail from Washington DC to San Diego, and southern counterpart to the Lincoln Highway.
