Up to 2020 occupation of Shushi the street was called in honor of Garegin Nzhdeh, the widely admired national hero of Armenians.
Garegin Ter-Harutyunyan better known by his nom de guerre Garegin Nzhdeh (Armenian: Գարեգին Նժդեհ) was an Armenian statesman and military strategist, who was involved in the national liberation struggle against Turks and Caucasian Tatars (since 1936 known as Azeris). In 1921, he was a key figure in the establishment of the Republic of Mountainous Armenia, an anti-Bolshevik state that became a key factor that led to the inclusion of the province of Syunik into Soviet Armenia.
