New version of Wikimapia released
We released the new version of Wikimapia. It is the next step in Wikimapia development, to make map more readable for users. Some months after Wikimapia launch we faced rectangles mess problem in populated areas. Old Wikimapia with rectangles is understandable by geeks, but totally unreadable by usual visitors, we found this out by several usability tests.

Wikimapia celebrate 3 year anniversary
This month we celebrate 3 years birthday of Wikimapia, as well as passing the creation of 10 000 000 places and 2 500 000 kilometers of roads.
Wikimapia is an editable interactive map with a goal to create and maintain a free, complete, multilingual, up-to-date map of the whole world.
Our long-term objectives are clear - we need to describe the whole Earth:
· all places (create places outlines, title, description, address, category)
· all additional mapping data (isles, coastline, rivers, etc.)
· all roads (names, special information for routing and navigation)
· all transport infrastructure (railroads, ferry ways, metro, bus, etc.) in a way to use it for routing and navigation, not only for automobiles use, but also for pedestrians and other transport usage
· all countries and administrative borders
Not all features are finished, but we are implementing them step-by-step, here are some of them which we plan to open very soon:
· API, so all people may use geodata stored in Wikimapia
· Functional history for actions in Wikimapia
· Ability to add many places in one place (for example: restaurant, shop and pharmacy in same building)

Wikimaipa Beta update
Hello All!
We have made a major update of Wikimapia BETA. The main thing - BETA now is faster and you will notice it, many internal functions were rewritten just for this. Also in design of the information window you may notice back and forward buttons, which really helps in navigation.
There are not too many things left to completely release Wikimapia BETA, old version will also be accessible.
Few days ago I put some lines of roads interface to translation system, if you don't see them in your language, you may help to translate it at
wikimapia.org/translate/Also linear databases were changed, this allow us to store, use, export and to do other manipulations without problems with all road/railroad/river/ferry networks in the world. And we made them more precise: positioning from 1-2 meters to within 0.1-0.2 m. (like the places). At this time we have 17 000 000 segments of linear features (in October 2008 we had only 500 000).
