I think this forum need emoticons facility. So, users can easily add emoticons in this forum without insert some code (i.e. [ img ] [ /img ]).
Wikimapia Emoticons e.g. [img:20omx7kr]http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0013.gif[/img:20omx7kr] [img:20omx7kr]http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0002.gif[/img:20omx7kr] [img:20omx7kr]http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0003.gif[/img:20omx7kr] [img:20omx7kr]http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0024.gif[/img:20omx7kr] [img:20omx7kr]http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0001.gif[/img:20omx7kr] [img:20omx7kr]http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0006.gif[/img:20omx7kr] [img:20omx7kr]http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0007.gif[/img:20omx7kr] |

Thanks for the earlier tips.
Additional wishes:
1) Bring back the deletion recent checklist thingee which seems to have gone away today. Where I used to be able to delete twaddle entries, I now get simply a box saying you can't delete that ---and these are private residences with nonsense captions, not the White House.
2) Add a deletion option something like, "Ooops, I goofed; I mistakenly made this polygon myself, no one else has contributed to it, and I want to remove it." Hopefully such self-cancelled entries wouldn't count against one's rank-score.

| It would be nice if the underlying Google satellite map were more current. In the portion of New York State (USA) where I do most of my work the map is circa 2005. I know this because of the presence of a foundation for a Habitat house which was built in 2005. |

My wish for 2010 would be that the problems we experienced today would never happen again, and that the site owners and programmers would be a little better at communicating with the users by coming here to be a part of the discussion instead of ignoring us.
I wish that our needs (like requiring registration for adding/editing The Map) would be a little higher on their priority list.
I wish that they understood that their daily participation here in the forums would have a tremendous impact on how we felt about them, because it seems like they don't care at all about us.
I wish that communication was a skill that one could learn and apply easily.
I wish that being open was an asset that every one possessed and used.

I think it would be great if adding "forest" category painted the object in green I don't think "park" is equivalent to forest, but it is still the only way to make a green object on map. Thanks |

I think that parks and forest should be very different shades of gray, and forest should overlay on parks.
Speaking of which, rivers should ALSO overlay on parks and MANY MANY other objects, but they do not :-( |

Layering order? Where 1 is the highest layer and 6 is the lowest. (Please add more suggestions).
1. Lake isles, piers 2. Linear features (roads, railroads) 3. River, lakes 4. Forests, woods (dark green) 5. Building tags, non-building tags 6. Parks (pale green) |

RK77: Layering is very tricky and needs to be thought through very carefully.
Do you really want to exclude showing all other features, like roads and buildings etc on Islans in lakes? |

| If an area is appointed with [island] category, another layer logic within this area may be applied. |

Any layering order is broken by having islands. Want proof? Try imagining a lake with an island with a lake in it which has an island within. There are such cases. How is it possible to arrange layers so that all of these islands and all of these lakes are drawn?
The only solution for that kind of problem is to allow polygons to have holes in them cut out (a feature, available in OpenStreetMap).
Currently one of the more sensible layering orders would be: [0) Border only] 1) Linear features 2) Buildings 3) Forests 4) Isles and Piers 5) Rivers and lakes 6) Non-building tags except those mentioned elsewhere 7) Parks |

Easier input of categories in the tag.
Now you fiend 30 categories in the window to choose of. If the one you are looking is not among them, you have to type it in the ‘Search categories’ to make it available.
Is there a possibility that the last search category comes available in the ‘categories window’? So every time you search for a new one it comes available in the list and the last one(30) disapears from the list. So you don’t have to type it every time you want to choose that particular category? If this is technically possible every user has his own list of most used categories.

I wish to see this year Sardinian language among other Wikimapia working languages. There is the Corsican one, why there could not exist the Sardinian interface? In Sardinia there is a good group of hardly-working WM users, and the island tagging is reaching a very good level. We miss only to work in our language. |

I would like to see a visitor counter on each tag. A variety of things could be gleamed from the info. Ebay offers it so should wikimapia.
Also it would be nice to have the "Play Tour" option similar to what Google Earth offers. Perhaps for trip planning if you could use the filter option in what ever custom way you needed. Any number of options for research with global reach! |

After making many roads in many different location types, I find myself wishing strongly for an additional road size designation, between "Street, Low traffic" and "Road, High traffic". The size difference between those two sizes, is too large. I for one could make good use of an additional road size there. Perhaps for undivided roads that are 4 lane with a center left turn lane. "Road, High traffic is a little too large for that use.
In my opinion.
Thanks |

>>Perhaps for undivided roads that are 4 lane with a center left turn lane. "Road, High traffic is a little too large for that use.<<
I disagree. "Road, High traffic" is an excellent choice for that. There are some 2 lane, no turn lane roads here locally that are Road, High traffic. The width of the road has nothing to do with the volume of traffic.
"Road, low traffic" is something I use for residential areas, country roads without center lines, etc. |

I understand. As I have seen, there are many interpretations of just what is what, when it comes to the sizes of certain roads. (by the way, I was unclear before, I did not mean the physical size of the road when I said "size". Just "size" as they relate, one to another.)
Because there are so many differing thoughts on the subject, I have wished there was a specification written down and I recently found just that. As I look through it, I discover that you are correct, Scott. "Road, high traffic" is just as you described and that is how I plan to use it from now on.
My initial thoughts were, that there [u:25p5hrsr]seems[/u:25p5hrsr] to be more relative road sizes in use, than the 5 specified, would allow for. Still, I was glad to find the specifications spelled out.
The users here may have already seen this, but in the event that not everyone has, please excuse me for quoting the text that I found, under the heading "Beta Help: Roads edit". -------------------------------------- Dirt road Select for gravel, unpaved or dirt roads. These roads must be usable by vehicles. They are also shown at zoom level 13 or higher.
Courtyard road Courtyard roads are used for paved alleyways, private roads and driveways. They may or may not have an official name, and if they don't, be sure that your name for it mentions that it is not official in the description field. They are shown at zoom level 13 or higher.
Street, Low traffic Low traffic streets are typified by having one lane in each direction. In some cases, they may have only one lane. Also, low traffic streets tend to be in residential areas. Low traffic streets are shown at zoom level 11 or higher.
Road, High traffic High traffic streets are typified by having two or more lanes in each direction. They tend to be well-known to locals, and to be lined by businesses rather than residences. High traffic streets are shown at zoom level 8 or higher.
Highway Highways are typified by having two lanes or more in each direction, limited access from other roads, and by a median strip which divides the two directions of traffic. These features make high speed, high volume traffic possible. It is best to draw each direction of highways with its own road. Highways are shown at zoom level 8 or higher. |

While the definitions quoted by Xantrex are helpful, and are the only official thing we have, and therefore should be followed, they - in my opinion- need further fleshing out, as the above post by stcraftie proves. There is still a lot of room for interpretation, part of which may be due to linguistic/translation sutleties between different languages.
To me his examples are not roads at all. For me the definition of a road is something that is designed and built, and by regulation is destined for motorized vehicular traffic. This is irrespective of surface (paved or unpaved) and width ( 1 meter of 30 meters). If the pathway is not suited for (or not allowed) for motorized vehicles is is not a road but a path.
I believe that it is relatively urget to do two things:
1. Create separate official signatures for the various no-motorized vehicle pathways (from hiking trails to Pedestrian streets [i.e wide roads in downtown pedestrian zones and parks)
2. Then: Rewrite the definitions in the instructions
As has been pointed out, the different signatures are (and should be) defined by the 'nature' of the pathway, which is is function and its use, and not by its width or physical appearance. Note that the official definitions use "tend to be" and not "are". Width is a 'indication' , NOT a defining element in these definitions. |

<Courtyard roads are roads that are seldom driven upon.> Seldom, not never. I think you remember the street mall in Colorado.
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.wikimapia.org/#lat=39.7474209&lon=-104.9951577&z=16&l=0&m=s&v=9&show=/6674268/16th-Street-Mall">www.wikimapia.org/#lat=39.747420 ... treet-Mall<!-- m -->
The road there is a classic courtyard road. Not designed for motor vehicles, but in emergencies and for maintenance a vehicle can safely travel on it.
The same can be said of the Disneyland/ Disney World locations. Made for pedestrians, but electric carts can and do travel on these roads, and emergency vehicles/ firetrucks/ ambulances all have access.
From the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:
Main Entry: road 2 a : an open way for vehicles, persons, and animals; especially : one lying outside of an urban district. |

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/country/USA/New_Jersey/Wharton/">wikimapia.org/country/USA/New_Jersey/Wharton/<!-- m --> contains a link to "Morris County". Wrong!
The boundary for Morris County only appears in "Classic" mode. This makes it impractical to use the wiki[u:1ghzua76]MAP[/u:1ghzua76]ia to view the complete set of counties in New Jersey. |

| I'm afraid this won't help. Users from certain regions of the world (eg. India) are not interested in the idea of Wikimapia on its basic meaning. The quality of their tags is CRITICALLY poor, they serve rather as way to announce their existence, or to greet someone, than to describe the world. The same with their descriptions. Pursuit of self-interest there is something ordinary and normal. Photos are mostly to praise their appearance, cars, homes or simply present themselves (without any connection to the place in which they are puted) and not to show the place. This is a serious problem, because there are many such places around the world. Some time ago, reviewing the photos I came across a guy of Arab origin with a rifle in his hand. |

Thank you hakunnin, SPUTNlK, renkessler, Collectively guests are great contributors here; they have added many good places but personal houses, places outnumbered those. No offends, I guess there is a cultural problem exist; people from some countries do not like to expose their private properties and on the other hand people from other countries want to tell us everything, even if no one wants to know. Not only in India, this is happening everywhere, more or less. Attaching personal pictures is also connected to this phenomenon. They just don’t get it, this is a different place from those FacefulBooks, etc. I was just astonished to see someone added his all personal, family pictures to some tags and were irrelevant and claimed himself as a retired Indian Navy Officer! Again, no offends to anyone. Using capital letters and short form for words (sr. for senior), are disturbing as well, sounds they are screaming. I guess keyboard producing companies should accept renkessler’s suggestion; they should include a beeper. Today I saw a new topic and where I left a message and places added by the creator of that topic, is a good example regarding this topic. <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5929">wikimapia.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5929<!-- m --> I have added some parts of India, and other countries to my watch list and I can see people are adding places with mysterious info. Language problem is a great barrier, but I will try to learn some useful words used in those countries so that I can judge info added. I do not think it is easy but Internet and overflowed Indian communities are sources of help for me. Now I know, in Indian language, Gar is for Home and Nibass is for Villa. Therefore, if you see any tag with such words, you may delete, but take care to understand it before deleting. If there is any Indian here, please help us. If you check my neighbourhood, <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/#lat=51.5230102&lon=-0.1052392&z=14&l=0&m=s&v=4">wikimapia.org/#lat=51.5230102&lo ... =0&m=s&v=4<!-- m --> you will see a big mess there. Most people came to work and live here and they have added places where once they used to work and live, added their personal websites, etc. Teresa, other users and I did big deleting jobs there to keep that place clean. Educated and self educated are different, you can notice from that link. I once thought I should suggest WM admin not to allow guests to contribute, but many good places stopped me for doing that. Friends, do not worry, together we can deter them, especially those who have registered. This worked; many of them stopped adding personal places after I chased them, I also received some harsh reply. From first link above you can find that user sajudev2004 added nine places and eight of those are private house and were deleted. The last one I edited but there is another Ganesh Mandir nearby and waiting to know if that is a wrong place or not before we/I can delete the rest one. Again I have no intention to hurt anyone’s feelings. Thanks for your time. arif |

"Delete selection" options for roads, rivers, railroads, etc.
With as many bad roads that get created (no names, horrible paths, etc), it would often be preferable to select an entire multi-segment stretch of road and delete the entire thing than to go through hours of work fixing up other people's bad work. Bonus points for removing those deleted stretches from the "created road" stats of the person who created the bad road to begin with. |

The road "created by" should be displayed / highlighted on moving the curser over it,(just as the direction of traffic)without going to road edit option.... so that a guest user also gets more knowledge..!! I think we should update wikimapia considering above suggestion... can we??? Thanks |

If something should be more visible about linear features, I think it should be the name.
What good is a street map if the streets have no name? (This is a rhetorical question.)

| Another wish please: a capability to view a tag (maybe with the right-click) from the search results menu stack along the right side of the screen because sometimes some tags just refuse to expand when clicked. These tend to be micro-tiny tags discovered during deletion hunts. More than a few times, offensive tags that needed checking were up-openable. |
