can I export the road, river (vector) in one into 'ESRI shapefile'? instead of 'printscreen' then paste it in 'Microsoft paint', save in 'jpeg' then "on-screen redrawing" in Arcview?
or export to other vector format? |

I do not think this is possible RRRR, the other way around would also be very cool...:-)
I have so much data ready to be "imported" here from shapefiles and georeferenced.
I think it's a question of legal rights that makes it impossible since "normal people" don't "own" data; they either steel or "borrow" it... ;-) |

> Martin67 I wish in the future, 'normal people' can 'get/borrow' not "steal" the vector data from WM, as long as the WM programmer provide the 'free' (GNU/open source) tool. |

You are certainly right, I just hate these kind of rules; I understand them but meanwhile they just slow down the process of having good and precise map data available for all.
One day maybe... |

| What rules are you referring to regarding export/import of data? |

I was referring to copyrights of map data from different level sources; Municipal, Provincial, and Federal... (in shapefiles, tab, DXF, Etc.)
These data are available to be used only (in my case) for my working place since my office purchased the rights at high cost to use them. (Not for "me" to bring them home and put them in WikiMapia or any other web site)
Same goes for the imagery we have at the office. We have 800 georeferenced orthophotos with 30cm resolution but they are only available for working purposes; I cannot send them to "Google" for them to put in Google Map... (I wish I could though cause my sector is limited to view level 14 which sucks...) |

I see, thanks Martin :)
Putting copyrights aside, there is plenty of open GIS data that could be shared if we had the import/export tools. The U.S. Land Use database comes to mind.
In RRRR's original question, I imagine that since I can view WM in Google Earth and since admins are supposedly working on an API. One day...hope beyond hope...everyone's hard work will be available in a variety of formats. |

Map Data (originally as shapefiles, dxf etc)
There is also a lot of data that can be legally licensed for non-commercial purposes. I have the right to all of the Great Barrier Reef data for a period of 10 years, including all updates, just as an example. All it took was a request.
The key term here is 'non-commercial' use of the data. That does not mean we cannot incorporate it in a web site, it just means we cannot charge people to access or to download the data. This will probably not be a problem for most of us as individuals, it is the WM developers that need to consider this.
Like Martin, I have offered a lot of data to the WM team, and all of it can be imported to WM in a great batch as kml files, but no one is able to say yet when they will take us up on it.
