[b:kyn5s2ih]== Petition to FREE WIKIMAPIA ==[/b:kyn5s2ih]

This is a petition to change Wikimapia's Terms of Service ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="wikimapia.org/terms_reference.html">wikimapia.org/terms_reference.html<;!-- m --> ) to make Wikimapia Free, in the sense that:

* Content donated free of charge by members of the community remain available as [b:kyn5s2ih]Free content[/b:kyn5s2ih] ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_content">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_content<;!-- m -->), to give the world the freedom to use, distribute copies, modify, and to derive works from the fruit of our labour;
* The software be published under a [b:kyn5s2ih]Free license[/b:kyn5s2ih] ( <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software<;!-- m --> ), so that it can be used, studied, and modified without restriction ( for example, Creative Commons licenses: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="creativecommons.org/about/licenses/">creativecommons.org/about/licenses/<;!-- m --> )

While it is true that the [b:kyn5s2ih]Wikimapia Team has no obligation[/b:kyn5s2ih] to provide the service of running the servers and providing the software, it is [b:kyn5s2ih]equally true that the Wikimapia Contributors bear no obligation[/b:kyn5s2ih] to contribute this content voluntarily.

Recent developments have clearly indicated that the Wikimapia Team is not able to handle alone the responsibility of properly managing this project. It is time for us to take a stand and [b:kyn5s2ih]defend our work[/b:kyn5s2ih]!

The [b:kyn5s2ih]current state[/b:kyn5s2ih] of Wikimapia:

* [b:kyn5s2ih]Puts our work in jeopardy![/b:kyn5s2ih] I have found weaknesses in the Wikimapia API which could allow a vandal to create ghost tags, change deleted tags, among other things. This would be unlikely to happen under the auspices of the community.
* [b:kyn5s2ih]Devalues our work![/b:kyn5s2ih] If anybody could contribute tools, we would have long ago had a full palette of tools to help us make professional quality polygons with ease! We would be able to tag new kinds of things, and have a great filter to view the map any way we like. We could make better tools to combat vandals. Our work would be more valuable, and we would be proud to show it to our friends!
* Means [b:kyn5s2ih]Wikimapia will eventually be outcompeted[/b:kyn5s2ih] by a superior project, with better tools, and users with better motivation to contribute quality content.

Members of other projects such as Wikipedia do not contribute under anything less than a Free license, and neither should we.

This is a really sensible suggestion, and would benefit the developers, as well as users.

I agree with most of what you have said, but:

[i:27qsaokj]"The current state of Wikimapia:
...

* Means Wikimapia will eventually be outcompeted by a superior project, with better tools, and users with better motivation to contribute quality content."[/i:27qsaokj]

This is not an absolutely true statement, but an assumption. Nearly every product or service can be competed against, or improved, whether there is actual competition or none at all. It does not matter if it is proprietary, open source, or public domain. If anything, an open source project will create [b:27qsaokj]many[/b:27qsaokj] copycats, and then there is competition available by those less knowledgeable than other websites. On the other hand, copyrights are stolen, software is re-compiled and reverse-engineered, and our content is already taken from our labor and used into other websites hoping to make their own revenue stream out of our hard work.

Of course, I would like it to be open source, so that we can all contribute on the back end of the software as well as the front end. Most of us only contribute the content that the rest of the world sees. Yes, [b:27qsaokj]Specious[/b:27qsaokj] and a few others have created/provided tools for the rest of us to use.

But I look and see dozens of Wikipedia "copycats", forum readers, websites with duplicated information, and I do fear that WikiMapia must integrate itself with powerful websites with bigger names to fully make the next leap into complete usefulness with other web-based applications.

The problem does lie in that Google owns the images and maps (stop me if you've heard this one before!), so we are really along for [i:27qsaokj]their[/i:27qsaokj] ride. It is difficult to shut down the copycats and enforce our contributions. Lastly, the owners and developers of WikiMapia can do little to stop the WikiMapia-Wannabes.

A TOS is to protect the host of the site, and their TOS does that pretty well, I see no blatant issue with the TOS.

BUT, an important part of the TOS that you would like support from WM is this statement: "In other words you retain all of your ownership rights in your User Submissions."... Currently WM does NOT do a good enough job to protect OUR copyrights, if one does not DEFEND their copyrights you will LOSE them. They are providing a service to grant us the ability to create content but not provide us the proper tools to defend our copyrights and therefore not not following their own TOS. This argument should be considered as well and is congruent with the theme of this petition...

Partial agreement -- SIGNED
* user contributions should be available for re-use under a Free License
* however, the specific implementation in Wikimapia need not be
----* based on open-source software
----* free (as in free lunch = without cost to consumer)
----* unavailable to a for-profit solution
* Business models for web-based resources remain in a feverish state of evolution.
* suggestions for revisions to the statement of principle
-----* the Wikimapia API should be open-source, extensible and comprehensive; this is very different from suggesting that the Wikimapia code be open source
-----* the security model under which Wikimapia operates MUST be enhanced in order to safeguard the value of contributions; failure to do so will lead to inevitable depreciation in value of contributions over time

Agree. I joined Wikimapia because of because of the unprecedented access it gave me to place, alter, and identify features, especially roads. Yahoo maps allows other uses to edit road maps in certain other countries, but not in the US. I've spotted naming errors and missing roads in Yahoo, and reporting these to Yahoo has produced little insofar as results despite providing sources substantiating my report. Imagine how thrilled I was to find Wikimapia, and then how disappointed I was at how user-UNfriendly the interface is. Not to mention when I try to add my hometown, it is too large of a polygon. Parts of Rochester NY cannot be included as part of the city because they are too long and narrow. Let's get the community involved and improve the crap outta this. Signed in support of the proposal, JBC3.
